Baltimore Ravens 2009 Preview

John from pickmyNHLteam.com is a die-hard baseball fan in search of a hockey team to support. His website is a video blog reviewing each NHL team and trying to gauge fan support. It has recently been featured on NHL.com and AOL Sports. John invited All Habs to contribute to the discussion on behalf of Montreal Canadiens' fans.

It is interesting how things work out. On the very evening that the Montreal Canadiens celebrate their 100th birthday, I am responding to an invitation to explain what it's like to be a a fan of the oldest and most storied franchise in all of hockey.

It's a daunting task. How do I encapsulate one hundred years of history?

Supporters of other teams may try to entice with statistics. If that's of interest, the Canadiens are without an equal. You may be told elsewhere about division or conference championships. We only count one thing in Montreal — Stanley Cups.

The 24 banners in the rafters of the Bell Centre all commemorate Stanley Cup championships, the most difficult trophy to attain in all of sports. The Canadiens' achievement stands alone and will be unchallenged in the foreseeable future. The rival Toronto Maple Leafs have the second most Cups with 13, just over half of the Canadiens' number.

The Canadiens are simply one of the most successful teams in the world of sports.

The NHL Record Book is filled with numerous individual and team achievements of those wearing the bleu, blanc et rouge. The 1976-'77 Montreal Canadiens are considered, by many, the best team ever to play in the NHL. They compiled a record of 60 wins, a remarkable 8 losses, and 12 ties for 132 points.

54 Canadiens are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame, including 44 in the player category. Former Canadiens are sprinkled throughout the NHL in coaching or management positions.

While numbers can indicate a measure of success and can be quoted with pride, they cannot express the sheer emotion that envelops all passionate Habs' fans.

Who fills the 21,273 seats in the Bell Centre for every home game?

Who lines up on a cold January morning to pack the building for an All-Star practise?

  • “We might have 20 people at our practices in Philadelphia,” Eastern All-Star Jeff Carter said. “Here they have 20,000 fans, cameras, all the reporters. Actually, it was cool to be a part of it.”

Who boards buses and travels hours to wade into the unfriendly confines of the Wachovia Centre or the TD Garden?

The answer is obvious: fans of the Montreal Canadiens.

As they say in Montreal, the Canadiens are a religion. This city is fondly referred to as “the cradle of organized sport.” All hockey fans who make a visit to the Bell Centre, regardless of the team they support, report that it is an experience like no other in the league.

All of the above are compelling reasons to select the Habs as your team, but let me add one more.

As a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, you are welcomed into a community that is unmatched by any team. Devoted Habs' fans can be found in any NHL city, and they show up by the thousands to support their team when on the road. Yes, even in Toronto.

But even more unique, Canadiens' fans are located throughout the world. This vast and diverse network of people includes both new and life-long fans who are passionate devotees of the game of hockey, and the Canadiens. They will provide the ideal environment to help germinate the interest in the Habs as your newly adopted team.

Join us. We are Canadiens!

Commenting on this article either here or at pickmyNHLteam.com is a vote closer towards John becoming a Montreal Canadiens' fan.

This is a preview of the 2009 Baltimore Ravens whom I think will take a step back after a good 2008 NFL season. The Ravens like Atlanta had rookies at head coach and quarterback in 2008 but had a good season. Coach John Harbaugh showed he is ready for the NFL, and Joe Flacco did the same and had a great rookie quarterbacking season.

The Ravens play a nasty brand of defense and try to control the ball on offense. The loss of defensive coordinator Rex Ryan (new head coach of the Jets) will hurt the Baltimore Ravens badly in 2009. Ryan was replaced by Greg Mattison, the new defensive coordinator. Mattison has over 35 years of coaching experience but only two in the NFL; he was the Ravens linebacker coach in 2008.

As you will see in this article about the Ravens offseason moves, losing linebacker Bart Scott to Ryan and the Jets will hurt the team in 2009. Scott was joined by several other former Ravens who also headed to New York. Former Viking center Matt Birk was signed to help stabilize the offensive line. Long time tackle Willie Anderson retired. Tight end L.J. Smith and wide receiver Kelly Washington were signed to help the passing game and they could both start. The defense added some journeymen players but no real big names. Offensive lineman Michael Oher was a good pick in the first round of the draft and should start.

That is why I think the Ravens will take a step back; their defense is getting old and has a new coordinator. Ray Lewis raised a big stink before he was resigned and may not be overly happy to be a Baltimore Raven in 2009. As long as they have Suggs, Lewis, and Reed, the defense will be ok. But getting long in the tooth and missing Rex Ryan I don't see them as dominant as in years past.

The 2009 Baltimore Raven's offense should be more of the same, decent at ball control but not much of a passing threat. Joe Flacco did play well but he does not have quality weapons, thought Washington and Smith will help. Le'Ron McClain did bring the fullback into this century by having a stellar season. However Willis McGahee is old and injury prone at running back and may not be feature back material anymore. He has been on the 2nd team thus far in offseason workouts. McClain can play running back but mostly plays fullback. 3rd down back Ray Rice is apparently getting a shot at the starting slot. I don't expect rookies Cedric Peerman or Jason Cook to make much of a splash if they make the team.

The Ravens won't be as good in 2009 but shouldn't falter too much. Look for the Steelers to run away with the division and make the Super Bowl. Cleveland (now under Eric Mangini) and the Bengals should still suck. I expect the Ravens to go 9-7 or possibly 10-6 and contend for a wildcard spot in 2009.

Decorating with Color - Part One

What did Brown buy with the one thousand five hundred million pounds of UK taxpayers' money that he has given to the European Union fund to aid poorer countries cope with climate change?

That is a lot of money (to borrow a phrase from Mervyn King before the Fall) even without considering the paltry amounts made available for flood defences in the United Kingdom, where, that is, there has not been an even worse Labour policy decision to abandon fertile agricultural land to the sea. (And no, the United Kingdom is not suffering from global warming-induced climate change, it is tilting from west to east for geological reasons which are arguably just as devastating in their effects upon our own communities and capacities to feed ourselves and create wealth for a decent living standard.)

How does a kick-start to a climate administration organisation, beginning under European Union Federation auspices, that is to be extended to a global governance role, as soon as the tax on global financial transactions is in place, sound? (So unfortunate it was identified as a Tobin tax when it's actually a Gordon tax on bank profits.) That is going to take lots of negotiation and administrative input which Gordon will provide, what with his masterly grasp of finance and taxation and it being his tax after all.

So, Germany and France (it's currently Sarkozy's turn to mind Gordon) get another £1.5 billion out of the UK towards EU administrative expansion merely by dangling a job application in front of the second UK Prime Minister in a row - and the unelected are no more likely to realise their dream than the elected, while we get mulcted again; first the UK rebate, now Brown's £1.5 billion.

wow, dude. the action must be non-stop: typing, walking down the hallway, talking on the phone. i think you should get a stunt double so you don’t get hurt…

I was the child of a white walls Mother. My Mother did not like color on the walls. Every wall of every room of every house was some shade of “egg shell”. So when I grew up and had my own home, guess what color my walls were? Yes, they were white. I discovered what color is in 2000 when we built our new home. We decided to take a chance, do something different. And we never turned back.

Paint color can completely change the entire atmosphere of a room. You can use the color to create the feel you desire for each space. Spend some time in each room before you decide on the color. There are several things to take into account before you settle on your color. What is the finish of the furniture? Is it painted or unpainted wood, or is it a metal? Can it be changed?

Unpainted wood tends to tilt your colors more to the warm side, while painted wood can go in any direction depending on the color it is painted. Metal is more contemporary or modern and tends to go better with black, white, and bold primary colors. Another thing to take into account is the finish of the ceiling, and the floor covering. If you do not want to replace the curtains, be sure to coordinate the colors with them. And remember, you can paint the ceilings of your room to create even more of a change in the room. Ceilings do not have to be white.

The lighting in the room is also a very important factor. Different types of lighting can cause the same color to look completely different. Try different colors, using the light that is in the room you wish to paint, so that you get true indication of the color. Almost every paint company offers paint chips to help with your decision. Don't be afraid to grab a handful of them, take them home and stick them everywhere around the room. Try them beside the furniture and fabrics that you plan to use in the room. When you have narrowed your decision, go shopping. Many paint companies now offer small bottles or cans of paint samples. Purchase a sample size container of the color you have chosen. Paint a 12″ x12″ section of wall, in the light of the room you are painting. Live with it a few days. Feel the color, how it makes you feel, how it makes the room feel. If it is not what you are looking for, try another, but do not paint over the first sample. This will not always result in the same color shade, as sometimes the color you are painting over will tint the new color. If you are painting over a color with strong pigments, I would suggest you first over coat with white primer paint, so you get a clean color from the new color you are applying.

Not sure what way you want to go? Do you like warm colors or cool colors? Do you prefer blues, reds, yellows or greens? Maybe you like them all. To help with this decision and to point you toward the style that suites you best, start by walking around your room and gathering five or six of your favorite items. It can be a cup or bowl, a towel, or piece of furniture. Maybe it is a pillow or a picture. Your favorite items can be anything. Are these items similar in color family? If not, eliminate the items, one at a time, until you have one item left. What color is it? This will give you the best idea of your color family preference. You can do this in each room to help with your decision.

If you are going from a neutral to a bold color and are a little nervous about such a drastic change,

Self Help: Increase Self Confidence and Improve Low Self Esteem!

This is 'Muscle,' the latest outdoor seating design from French artist Alexandre Moronnoz. Along with Moronnoz's earlier works, Muscle makes a strong argument for moving to a world where form matches function in even our most everyday settings.

Moronnoz works with materials ranging from laser-cut steel (”Interferences”) to modular Y-shaped timber (”Y”). His designs are just exhibits for now, but hopefully they'll inspire us to abandon our staid park benches and bus stops. It's not like those are any more comfortable anyway.

SAN FRANCISCO  —  Police have arrested several San Francisco State University students who barricaded themselves inside a campus building to protest budget cuts and fee hikes.

University spokeswoman Ellen Griffin says university and San Francisco city police entered the Business Building at about 3:15 a.m. and arrested 23 people for misdemeanor trespassing.

Ten protesters outside the building were arrested for misdemeanor unlawful assembly and resisting arrests.

The students entered the building early Wednesday and blocked the doors with furniture. Most classes in the building were canceled but Griffin says they'll resume Thursday.

The school is part of the California State University system which increased undergraduate fees this year, cut enrollment and reduced course offerings.

Wanna feel great about yourself? Would you like to see all that you wish for come to be? Do you want to find the right balance? There's a secret weapon that will make it all happen-and it's You. The way you think about yourself will be your true ally in living an inspired and balanced life. Your ability to think positively and believe in yourself will form the cornerstone of your success. Here are five strategies to help you become your own champion.

1. Appreciate you

One way to develop a strong sense of self-contentment is to give yourself the gift of self-appreciation. Offer yourself the same respect and kindness you give to those you care deeply about. Treat yourself to favorite pastimes - great music, happy people, laughter.

2. Watch for negative self-talk

I've noticed that women, in particular, have a tendency to pick out, and pick on, the parts of themselves they like least. I can't tell you how many times I've heard women speak disparagingly about themselves: At the gym, a woman complains that she has a “jiggle butt.” At a fundraiser for my son's school one woman tells another, “I am such a bad mom. I bought a cake for the cake walk (a fundraising initiative) instead of making it myself.”

Whether said as a joke or not, these self-deprecating words can be damaging when the negativity stems from a deeper sense of dissatisfaction with oneself. Oftentimes negative comments tossed off in jest can come from a much more disapproving inner dialogue than might be revealed at the gym or the school.

You may immediately relate to these examples and recognize this kind of behavior as your own, or you might not even know that you have negative conversations with yourself. Take the mirror test to find out: The next time you see your reflection in a mirror, notice whether or not your first thought is a complimentary or a critical one. If it's critical (and for many of us it will be), it's time to stop running yourself down. Focus, instead, on what you like about yourself.

3. Focus on your attributes

Being happy in your own skin means getting comfortable with who you are, the way you look and what you want out of life. Instead of focusing on what you don't like about yourself, do your best to honor and appreciate what makes you unique. Your smile. Your sense of humor. Do you have wonderful hair or fabulous cheekbones? Now go further. What qualities define you as a person? What do you absolutely love about yourself? Is it your attitude? Resist the temptation to criticize yourself. This is a learned behavior and it can be unlearned with intentional action.

4. Don't apologize for your achievements

We have all achieved things in our lives, both big and small, personally and professionally. Often, though, negative self-talk will stop us from basking in the glow of our successes. You might find yourself saying, “Hey, that wasn't so great” or “I could have done it better” or “I didn't really deserve that.” You have the power to shut down this negative self-talk by honoring and celebrating your achievements. When you give yourself permission to feel positive about your accomplishments and refuse to listen to that negative inner dialogue, you will feel pleased. Proudly share your wins, rather than apologize for them. You might even amaze yourself when triumphal words such as “I'm great at my job,” “I am the best mother ever” or “I rock” roll off your tongue with hardly a thought. Watch how your confidence builds as you praise your wins.

5. Do the best you can

Your best is going to be different from situation to situation. It will change depending on how rested you feel, who is involved and where you might be. No matter what the circumstances, the most you can ask from yourself is to do your best… and then remember to acknowledge that what you've done is just that. Through this self-acknowledgment that you can be released from angst and regret, and possibly see the humorous side of things. This one action will contribute greatly to your sense of well-being

Patience Is One Of The Critical Attitudes Of Happy People

So, you want it now, all of it… Not willing to wait patiently at the gate of happiness and success you struggle, pursue, push, pull, fret, and stew over why life doesn't give you what you want when you want it.

Welcome to a life filled with stress, disappointment, anxiety and wasted days and months. Life is not about what will come into your life in the future, it is about what is in your life now. Whether it is - failure or success, happiness or unhappiness, wealth or poverty, giving or getting, being alone or with others. Life is a perfect example of the ebb and flow of the sea. Some days are filled with joy, others with sadness and disappointment. Some are filled with rewards while others are filled with paying the price not knowing whether the rewards will ever be there.

Once you accept anything - the struggle is over. Once you turn over your frustrations, desires, dreams, hopes and life to life you will be amazed at how quickly what you need (not necessarily what you want) will appear. Yes, everyone seems to get different rewards for their effort. Why does one author sell millions of books while another struggles to sell hundreds? Don't know folks. I just know that's just the way life is.

Why does one person find their true love in this life while others wait patiently for their love to appear? Why do some people have a great deal while others scrape by day after day? I don't have a clue. I have been to the mountaintop of success and I have spent time in the valley of despair. I know the frustration of waiting and the joy of effort. I know the anxiety of false hope and I have experienced the thrill of unexpected success. Why?

I can only tell you once I released and learned to live with patience, whatever was due me in relationship to my effort, desires and dreams came to me. It didn't always look like I pictured it, but nonetheless what I earned, deserved or needed came into my life. The skill I had to develop was that of acceptance not manipulation.

I had to learn to accept with dignity, gratitude and love rather than whine, complain and moan about why what came did not match my desires. Life is like this. Everyone gets what they get in life for many reasons. I no longer question the motives of God, the lessons of life and the outcomes I get. This does not mean to imply that I sit in my office waiting for the phone to ring and fed ex to deliver good news and checks.

It just means that I have to do my part and then let go of what the picture will look like when it is finished.

How to achieve happiness

We are living in world amidst so much of unlucky people, poverty, violence, stress, competition, and all sorts of sadness inducing environment you can think of. So it is only natural that a part of our mind always tends to carry a tinge of sadness or lean towards this negative emotion. This is something happening so natural that one may have to fight his/her way out of this influence in order to develop a happy frame of mind. This article throws light over 5 easy or top ways to happiness or to be happy. After going through the text below, it is for the reader to decide how effective it is going to be in your own life. So, here we go!

• First of all, the attitude is important. That is, you must be mentally ready to strive for happiness as much as possible, irrespective of what is happening in your life daily. So, before going to bed today, take few minutes to reach a resolution that you are going to be happy to the best extent possible from tomorrow onwards and repeat the vow daily. Once it becomes a habit, your mind automatically tunes itself to tread the happier line.

• A hearty smile is the best symptom of a happy mind. It not only makes you feel better but also sets the tone for the rest of the day, as others also will feel welcomed to come and talk to you. So, learn to smile at will.

• An idle mind is devil's workshop. Hence, always make it a point to be in the company of your friends or involve yourself in some activities that keeps you engaged. Don't let your mind wander idle.

• Be happy at what you are, even if you are ambitious. Ambition must be the drive to achieve something, and not a handle for disappointment, especially in case if you are not reaching your targets quickly. Misses and losses can happen in anybody's life. In such moments when you might be feeling low, take few minutes to write down the things you have or you are proud of and not many others have the luck to own. Once you do that, things will start to calm down and you will start to feel better.

• Always look for the silver lining at the moment of despair. Make it a habit to view the positives over negatives and hope for the best. Heard of the adage 'hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible'?

Finding purpose

Generally speaking there are two approaches to finding purpose. There is the approach to finding the purpose of 'my life' and there is the approach to finding 'life's purpose.' The purpose of 'my life' will tend, for the most part, to be focused in the outer world. The purpose of 'my life' tends to be focused in time and in creating a life situation that is relatively comfortable. It usually includes the doing of satisfying work, being in a loving relationship, doing no harm to others and being successful within the terms defined by the culture within which we live.

A life purpose, which is 'my life' focused will tend for the most part to be future orientated. It will tend to be predetermined and defined largely in language. Usually, although not explicitly, it will be defined in terms of good and bad or success and failure. My life purpose will tend to be linear in that it moves from point A to point B along a time line. In this sense 'my life purpose' is seen to be going somewhere.

Your life purpose will become an aspect of your identity. You will tend to judge yourself and be judged by others as having arrived or not arrived depending on circumstances. Your life purpose will be satisfying or not satisfying depending on what you consider you have achieved or not. There will be a sense of your getting somewhere, and maybe if you feel disappointment, getting nowhere. More often than not here will be a sense of never quite having arrived. In fact our collective conditioning promotes this non-arrival, which leaves you wanting for more.

Of course there will be times when you will feel you have made it. For a time you may feel successful in your job or career. For a time you may enjoy a healthy and loving relationship. You may for a long time be healthy and be relatively satisfied with 'your life.'

The other essential ingredient of 'my life' purpose is that you agree that you are having a separate existence from all other forms of life. You agree that you live between a beginning called birth, for an unknown period in time, and then you die. You hope however, that when you die you will still exist in some form. You hope you go somewhere else which you are told depends largely on how you have behaved along this time line called 'my life. Mostly you rely on the authority of others to tell you how it will be beyond your life in form.

Focusing on the purpose of 'my life' will at best give you some satisfaction. If you are really successful, as defined by the times you live in, you may experience great satisfaction. There will be times when you get exactly what you want but the desire and the wanting will come again and that desire will drag you into the future. It will drag you into the future life that you are intent on making meaningful in a pre-determined way. Rarely will you be present to the life that is in this moment going nowhere but with the potential to be everywhere and everything.

This life purpose as directed by 'little me' has its highest aspiration in living a life of relative ease and comfort. Along the way we hope to love and be loved by family and others who are relatively speaking of like mind. Of course death is always the end result but collectively we agree that this is something we can choose to ignore and do ignore until it comes knocking on our door.

Mostly, however, 'my life' as determined by 'little me' is absent of wonder, absent of joy and the absent of Love. There may be glimpses of these states of being but very quickly these tend to be forgotten or are retained only as a fond memory. These perfumes of Being labelled wonder, joy and Love are not the experience of the time-based identity called 'me' or 'mine.' These perfumes of Being are not something that you do or achieve.

In the experience of wonder you are not. In the experience of joy there is joy but there is no one having a joy filled experience. In the experience of Love it is not 'my love' that is but the flow of Love arising moment-to-moment moving from the formless into and through form. This is compassion, which is the movement of Love in Action.

The real purpose of life in human form is to realise that you are a Being. Even to say you are a Being suggests something that there is something that is separate. It is closer to say you are Being in each and every moment. Only to realise this is not something that you do. This realisation is not about achievement, not about going anywhere called success or failure but simply abiding within the deep stillness of this moment. Out of this stillness arises love beyond the tyranny of the thinking about 'my life' mind.

We have forgotten what it is to trust life to be as it is. In this trusting of life the doing and the doer are one. This is Love in Action. This is right action, which does not have an opposite. Right action and wrong action are there when judgement is there and when there is a sense of someone doing the action. This is action from ego and not action from the feeling of at-one-ment with the source.

Most people are not prepared to put their faith in allowing life to arise as it is and allow creation to be creative from this state. They are caught within the idea of time and are focused on doing my life and my life purpose. Within this focus more and more needs to be done to maintain what is called 'my standard of living.' This standard of living is usually measured in terms of money, status, success etc. With the doing of 'my life' and my life purpose there is the creation of a separate identity, which must be protected. When things change as they always will there is a sense of loss.

We have forgotten the power of wonder, joy and Love to move mountains including mountains of dissatisfaction. We have forgotten the power of life to create life and life more abundantly. This does not mean we create more things although it may mean that in any given moment. It means that the life of abundance is not about more but about now and allowing the feeling of the wonder of now. It is allowing life, which is the dance of creation to be the dance. Joy, wonder and Love are the movement of this allowing.

This movement of the dance of life, which is forever becoming is not something predetermined. It is arising and falling within each moment. It is not within time and not conditional. A sense of wonder is felt within that which is being created anew. Wonder is never predetermined which is always of the 'little me' mind. Wonder does not arise from the experience of 'little me.' It arises out of a sense of absence of 'little me' who lets go of all the attachments to what they think they are and surrenders to the glory of no thing ness.

For the majority of people living life within the 'little me' focus, identified with time, space and a body this invitation to no thing ness is no invitation at all. Better, they think, that we do our lives and forget about going to this crazy place of nowhere. Better to forget any sense of wonder, forget about joy and forget about Love.

So we enter a state of forgetting who we are. We then lose our birthright. We think, “Let it be enough that we might find some 'little me' love and hope that it lasts.” So we go back to sleep and refuse the beautiful invitation to be all that we are as a fully realised human being. This is the knowing of who we are in the oneness of all there is forever and ever. To know this is to know that the blessing is already here and you are it.

Success starts with a state of mind

Christopher Columbus knew it. Thomas Edison lived it. Bill Gates believed it. And Marcus Aurelius said it, “Our life is what our thoughts make of it… A man's true greatness lies in the consciousness of an honest purpose in life, founded on a just estimate of himself…” You may ask why this is so. The formula for this is quite simple.

1. What you believe, you act on. Action begins with, and is instigated by, belief. You can not act on something that you do not, at some level, believe in, whether you are in favor of, or in opposition to, a particular idea or ideal, that position is held firm by your belief.

2. What you act on, you manifest. Any action you take results in some consequence. Every action in the universe is met with and equal reaction. Whether you are starting a conversation with a stranger, trying to learn new things, or simply looking at the food in your pantry, any action you take regarding these things WILL RESULT in a tangible “re-action”. Perhaps it will be a new friendship. Perhaps it will be deeper knowledge achieved through your research. Perhaps it will simply be dinner!

3. What you manifest creates your reality. This is your personal paradigm.

The only variable in this process is the strength and duration of your belief. If your belief is not strong, if it weak or vacillating, then you are not likely to act on it. If you do not act on it, then you can not manifest it and it can not become part of your reality; your personal paradigm.

This is quite difficult for most people to comprehend, and even more difficult to implement. We have a tendency to repeat old mistakes and resist change, although we know deep down inside that change is inevitable. Nothing stays the same forever. There is an old saying that defines insanity as the expectation that acting in the same way will produce different results.

People who are successful and happy are people who have mastered the art of change. They are not afraid to revisit their prior actions and approach their goal differently, so that they are NOT acting in the same way while expecting different results. They are not afraid to move out of their comfort zones. Rather, they understand that in order for growth to occur, they must have the courage to live outside their comfort zones. Page 220 of Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life states this truth eloquently and he writes, “There is no growth without change; no change without fear or loss; no loss without pain.” Successful people know this, and do not let fear, the occasional set back (i.e. interim failure), or doubt alter their vision or deter them from their goal.

Having a definitive, crystalline goal is the first step in forming your personal paradigm. You MUST be able to visualize the final end product or outcome of your goal or the end-product. It must be a singular achievement that you are passionate about.

Christopher Columbus KNEW that he could sail west and not fall off a flat planet. He hoped to find India. He happened to stumble into America, but nonetheless, he sailed west and lived to tell about it!

Thomas Edison KNEW he could create a practical incandescent lightbulb. He tested over 3000 filaments before he found one that worked, but he did it; and he revolutionized the world!

Michael Dell KNEW that he could overtake the computer behemoth IBM; and look at him now. Bill Gates KNOWS that eventually “every home will have a personal computer.” He is well on his way to achieving that vision.

Goals, such as these, are not achieved overnight. All worthwhile achievements take time. So you must be patient, consistent, and persistent in your effort. You must have the faith to BELIEVE in your goals to maintain your desire to succeed.

By knowing this truth, you can begin to shape and mold your reality by taking steps, every day, to create a crystalline vision of what your want your reality to be. Be prepared, however, because this is not easy. It takes work. It takes courage. And, most of all, it takes the fortitude of persistence so that you put aside all thoughts of and encounters with failure, and you view failure as an opportunity or an obstacle to overcome, but not an end in and of itself.

However, once you have formed your vision; once you have set your crystalline goal as a fixture into your thoughts, you WILL begin to take action toward your goal. It is inevitable. All action is instigated by your belief. Further, what you act on, you manifest. Therefore, you will soon find yourself attracting opportunities, ideas, solutions, and people who can and will propel you toward achieving your goals.

Success is no secret that is available only to an elite few. It is available to everyone, all the time. It is the certainty of the power that you possess - the power of your own beliefs to create and manifest your own personal paradigm; you success paradigm.

So I ask you, what is your paradigm? What Do You Believe?

What a gift life is. Another day. Wow!

Think about it. You are the sum total of ALL your days up until now. Every day has gone into creating you. When you're 70, 80, 90 what a horrible shame it would be if you were to look back and think, “I didn't do so many things I wanted to do. I was mad or scared half the time.” Use today to get where you want to go. Maybe you're behind your pre-determined schedule. Perhaps you wanted to do more by now than you have. That's not a problem. You've got today. How lucky you are…

Don't even think about putting it off 'til tomorrow. Even if there's no PLACE to go or big goal you can work on today, you can do something else. Look around. Things may be bustling, pushing, moving at cyber speed. But you can be alone in your thoughts and see whatever you want.

-That mountain is there just for you. Awesome!

-Your mother's voice. Beautiful! You may never hear it again.

-Your kids. Precious!

-Your friends. They love you! Enjoy it.

Is there crap? Huge difficult challenges? Sure, but you can learn from it. That's good, right? Just notice the good stuff right now. What could possibly make today great? A bunch of stuff. And don't think that playing or lounging is the only way to celebrate YOUR day. What can you do?

–Do your best at work - Make today your crowning achievement.

–Recognize someone else - Put a smile on some faces.

–Find out about someone else - Someone on your “team.” Be genuine.

–Take some time off if you need to - There might be roses that need smelling.

–Call someone you haven't talked to in a while. Or pay 'em a visit.

–Meditate - With no goal in mind. Just notice your thoughts.

–Look in the mirror - You're a pretty cool person. Recognize it. It's true.

–Read a chapter - learning is your ticket to where ever you want to go.

–Look at your victory log - And do something today to add to it.

–Laugh - at yourself, others, cartoons, TV shows, commercials. Just laugh.

And I'm sure that you can think of more stuff. The important point is…

Today IS a beautiful day.

But if your perspective is screwed up, you won't see it. Review the list above and add to it if you like. Review it regularly and your view will change. Guaranteed. Don't make feeling good so hard. It's not. You don't have to be at Disney World to have a good day. Today is God's gift to you. Appreciate the gift no matter what it is that you find yourself involved in.

It was given in love. Accept it with love.

Winning beliefs:

– I'm making today my crowning achievement

– Today is my day to excel

– I am enjoying myself immensely right now

– I love being me

– Enjoyment and I are one

– I appreciate this gift of a new day

Empowering quote:

“It's a beautiful day. Don't let it get away.” -Bono

Ship Modeling for Beginners

Xark raised fair and unfair criticism of our work at the New Business Models for News Project. I’ll respond:

Xarc’s Dan Conover says that the models we presented look a lot like present models, only different. Fair and true. Our goal was to look at what news in a metro market would look like if the large daily paper died today. — not in the la-la land of the future of news and media I often write about here (more on that in a minute) — but today.

So we based our assumptions on known realities: on local bloggers who are making a living and how they are doing it today, on new news organizations that are springing up today, on the proportion of digital revenue being earned today.

If you’ve heard any of my presentations of the models, you have heard me lament that we chose to work in the lingua franca of the present: CPM-based display advertising and criminally low engagement numbers that are sinfully standard in the newspaper business. Neither is good enough. But we wanted to use a language and precedents that people in this space would understand. We then pushed development of new models for revenue and of networks that must be used to increase value.

Conover says that without an “exit strategy” a hyperlocal blog is not a business but merely a job. With respect, he is judging the entrepreneurial future of news through old, institutional glasses. Much of the work of very local journalism will be done by these new, single-proprietor businesses (and volunteers). If we took his perspective, then there would be little potential in the restaurant, drycleaning, plumbing, or dental industries because many of their practitioners have no exit strategy, only sustainable jobs. Welcome to the new, small-is-the-new-big world. This is precisely why we propose that critical mass will be reached not with old companies owning the market but with new companies operating together in networks. See: Glam, the largest women’s brand online. New model.

Conover is fair to say that the future – not today but tomorrow – won’t look much like the present, including the present we postulate in our models. I do indeed agree that the future could look wildly different. I have speculated about systems for sharing information that will reduce the marginal cost of news to zero with journalists adding value only where appropriate and where that value can be recouped. I have blathered on and on about hyperpersonal news streams replacing the article as the atomic unit of news. I have predicted a world with networked journalism, news made by Wave, and similar outlandishness. If I had tried to present all that as a vision for the news of today – the day a paper dies – I would have blown brains and been laughed out of Aspen and with good reason. But that was not the goal of the New Business Models for News Project. It was to get people to see a new today.

Believe me, Dan, if you want to have a future-shock derby with far out ideas for what news will look in the future but sooner than we think, then I’m happy to compete. But that wasn’t our job here.

And don’t blame the funder of our work for that. Connover is unfair to slap the Knight Foundation, which paid for the first phase of this work, saying: “In the short term, foundation money is likely to continue producing studies based on business models that reflect conventional wisdom about media.” The Knight Foundation did not tell us how to envision our models; that is an allegation without evidence.

It’s particularly unfair since the Knight Foundation – more than any other foundation – has been aggressively pushing inventors to imagine and create new visions and realities for news. The Knight Foundation generally does not favor institutions over entrepreneurs; quite the contrary. You’re free to judge my defense of Knight in light of the fact that they did fund this phase of my work. But I think Knight’s work defends itself.

So, yes, Dan, I do agree that the models were based on present realities. That was precisely what we set out to do: to envision an immediate future that will be credible in present terms. But I also take the challenge to envision more futures for news and – if you watched my presentations – you’d see some I hope to work on. I want to examine the workings of the link economy I talk about so much and prescribe how to exploit it. I want to examine new content exchange models. I want to examine entirely new forms of news and the exchange of information.

This Wednesday in my entrepreneurial journalism class at CUNY, my students will present to a jury 15 businesses, some of which begin to imagine fairly radical new visions of news. They hope to win some of the $50,000 in seed money we have from another foundation, McCormick. And then they hope to go build those businesses and make them sustainable the day after tomorrow. Thursday, that is.

: Later: In the comments, I added this:

I’m trying to be realistic in the near term. I say that the old institutions are not realistic in thinking they can maintain their old business models. I also say that the futureshockers – myself included – are not realistic when we talk about wild new models for news. I’ll repeat: think about TODAY. I mean that. The paper dies tomorrow. You have people eager to do journalism. You have some – but very little – investment. You have a proven amount of revenue and nothing more. What do you do? That’s the question we answered. But there is, of course, no one answer. What we want is discussion and ideas, not just bullets. What would be helpful is to see you and others, Dan included, flesh out your own visions for a sustainable future of journalism starting TODAY.

According to the lawmaker, the president picked up the phone several weeks ago to  find out why  Conyers was “demeaning” him.

Obama’s decision to challenge Conyers highlights a sensitivity to criticism the president has taken on the left. Conyers’s critical remarks, many of which have been reported on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post, appear to have irritated the president, known for his calm demeanor.

Conyers, the second-longest-serving member of the House, said, “ called me and told me that he heard that I was demeaning him and I had to explain to him that it wasn’t anything personal, it was an honest difference on the issues. And he said, ‘Well, let’s talk about it.’”

Sitting in the Judiciary Committee’s conference room two days after Obama delivered his speech on Afghanistan, the 23-term lawmaker said he wasn’t in the mood to “chat.”

Obama’s move to send in 30,000 troops to Afghanistan by the summer of 2010 has clearly disappointed Conyers.

He said he intends to press his case in writing soon.

“I want something so serious that he has to respond in writing, like I am responding in writing to him,” he said.

“Calling in generals and admirals to discuss troop strength is like me taking my youngest to McDonald’s to ask if he likes french fries,” Conyers said.

Many on the left have argued that military leaders routinely respond to crises by calling for more troops.

“I’ve been saying I don’t agree with him on Afghanistan, I think he screwed up on healthcare reform, on Guantánamo and kicking Greg off,” Conyers said, referring to the departure of former White House counsel Greg Craig.

Craig was a leading proponent in the White House of closing the terrorist detention center at Guantánamo Bay and releasing photos of detainees undergoing torture. Closing the military prison has proven to be politically difficult, and Obama reversed field on the photos, opting not to make them publicly available.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment for this article.

The liberal Conyers has been an outspoken proponent of a single-payer healthcare system and a critic of U.S. involvement in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He has also been at odds with White House policy on extending expiring  provisions of the Patriot Act, crafting legislation that is to the left of the Senate’s version.

Obama and Conyers have a complicated and nuanced relationship.

Conyers was the first member of the Congressional Black Caucus to endorse Obama over then-Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) for the 2008 Democratic nomination for president.

Conyers earlier this year noted that he spent most weekends in 2007 and 2008 on the campaign trail trying to get Obama elected.

“I did whatever was necessary to be done to win. I met with ministers, I met with unions, I met with lawyers, I met with community activists, I met with healthcare people,” Conyers explained in early April.

The 80-year-old lawmaker, who participated in the civil rights movement alongside Martin Luther King Jr., does not shy away from saying what is on his mind.

Water and model ships: The urge to combine the two is overpowering. As long as there is water nearby, makeshift boats will be added to the equation. In some cases, it's a piece of wood in a rain puddle or a plastic tug in the bathtub. For ship modelers, it can mean building a scale model that is small enough for war gaming or large enough to reenact seafaring battles. The art of building fine scale ship models goes back to ancient times, and is still a worldwide hobby that attracts people of all ages.

Want to start building ship models? Here are basic steps to get started.

Research the hobby. There are many resources available for the beginning ship modeler.

1. Many modelers start with encouragement from a family member or friend who already builds ship models. If there is someone in your life who models ships, ask them for advice. Most modelers are glad to encourage beginners, and they always have great build stories to tell!

2. Frequent hobby stores, especially ones that sell ship kit models and parts. Staff members can give you ideas of the difficulty of models and provide basic instructions.

3. Attend model shows and competitions. They are scheduled year around and located all around the country. If you see a ship model you like, find the builder and ask lots of questions.

4. Check the Internet. Many websites are dedicated to ship modeling, with Blogs and threads for all levels of ship building skills. Again, modelers are happy to share their knowledge. Popular websites include: www.steelnavy.com and www.modelwarships.com.

5. Build your reference library. Good resource material can be found in books, CD's, magazines, and Internet articles. Ask opinions from other modelers; check libraries; search for items on the Internet.

6. Join a scale modeling club. You can find club websites on the Internet, and most hobby stores have lists of model-related clubs in the region. To start, check out www.ipmsusa.org for model clubs in the United States and www.ipmscanada.com for model clubs in Canada.

Pick a kit and start modeling. If you are like most ship modelers, this will be the only time you have only one kit on the work bench. Your inventory of kits will accumulate quickly, and that's part of the fun. Work on your new model now and look forward to the next build. Many modelers have several that they work on at a time, just to keep things interesting and varied. How do you pick that first kit? Here is a guide.

1. Choose the material you want to first work with. Ship kits come in a variety of materials. They range from paper models to resin, plastic and wood. Paper model kits are cut out like paper dolls and assembled with white glue. Resin models generally come with the hull and deck houses as one piece. They are assembled with super glue or epoxy cement. Plastic kits come with parts on sprue “trees.” The parts are cut off and assembled with plastic cement. Wood models come in solid hull or plank-on-frame/bulkhead. With these kits, the builder gets the basic materials and a set of plans. They are assembled with wood glue.

2. Decide what interests you the most. The types of ship models are vast. They range from ancient Phoenician ships to the Tall ships of the 1700's and 1800's, and on to today's ships seen at sea and in harbors. Model kits come in a variety of popular scales that commonly range from 1/700 scale to 1/48th scale. Pick one that is not terribly complicated and comes with good instruction sheets.

3. Start with a basic tool inventory: a hobby knife with #11 blade, paint brushes, glue, model paint, a straight edge, tweezers, sand paper and sanding sticks. Add to it as your need arises and the pocketbook allows. The second wave of tools will include a vise, airbrush, punch & die set, and clamps, among other items. Many tools can be purchased at hobby stores, on-line or in craft stores. Also look in creative places such as tool sales bins, craft stores and cosmetic departments.

Good luck on your first ship modeling adventure. You are joining enthusiasts worldwide, in an art form that is thousands of years old. You are in good company. Enjoy!

Things You Never Thought Your Cell Phone Would Ever Do

nfl sports

The act of communication has evolved greatly in the past hundred years. Now we have cell phones, PDA's and laptops that can access the Internet anywhere they are in the world. However, the art of communication has had further development when concerning cell phones. Did you know there are hundreds of functions your cell phone can perform? You cell phone is more than a simple phone and text messaging device.

Now, thanks to Google and other companies, your phone is a complete information source. I have discovered four functions your cell phone can do - and most people aren't even aware of them. So, read on to discover some of the secrets hiding within your cell phone.

1. As I said earlier, your cell phone is being revolutionized by the almighty Google. Now, you basically have the world at your fingertips, literally. Most people have some sort of text messaging plan with their cell phone package - if not, nearly every cell phone carrier, such as Cingular (whoops, the New AT&T), T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular, have very reasonable text messaging plans - more than likely you can get unlimited text messages for under $20.00 - if you don't have it, look into it, especially after what you find out. With the art form of texting, you can access the power of Google in all it's splendor - without having to own a cell phone with a web browser.

All you have to do is text GOOGL, or 46645, and BAM! You have instant access to the worlds most powerful search engine. You will have access to addresses, phone numbers, weather, sports scores and even word definitions. Basically how this service works, is say you're looking for a great sushi restaurant, but you aren't sure where to find one. Well, send a text to GOOGL (46645) and type in sushi and then the zip code (example: sushi 90210) and then you will get a text message with the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the sushi restaurants in the that zip code - definitely great if you aren't familiar with the area you're in.

However, if you're looking for something more specific (like a phone number to your favorite take out joint) than just type the name in, like (Pointers Pizza, Richmond Heights, MO - and to save time, just enter in the business name followed by the zip code), and then in a minute or so, you have the address and phone number of the business you're trying to reach. And think, you don't have to pay anything other than standard text messaging fees…but if you have unlimited texts, you can use this service as much as you want without having to worry about your upcoming cell phone bill.

2. With this next feature, you can actually call someone via your SMS service. The main benefit of this function is if you call internationally, you'll save loads of money due to cheaper rates. Basically how this function works, is you first sign up with a SMS service, such as Call2.com or MyWebCalls.com. The main difference between the two of these services is that Call2.com uses standard phone lines, as MyWebCalls.com uses VoIP for its connection.

The only downside to the latter site, is it can sometimes be slightly less reliable (which is probably why it's cheaper). After registering with whatever company you choose, you can then send an SMS message to their various server, and if you have previously set up that number with them it will call it automatically. However, if you don't have a preset telephone number, you will be sent to a dial-tone where you can place the call yourself. This service is amazing whenever you're calling outside of the country.

3. Now, this next function is one of my favorites because it involves a service that I personally used for many years - and paid for it dearly. Everyone should be familiar with dialing 411 in order to get a phone number for someone or some business. And we all know, that it normally costs you $1 every time you call, which for some people is okay, because they don't use the service that much, but if you use it a lot, those dollars can sure add up. However, there is now a phone service that is just like the old 411 service (which means you won't talk to an actual person, it's all automated).

Basically all you do is call 1-800-FREE-411, and then just tell the automated “operator” the city, state and name of the listing, and then before you can scratch where the sun-don't-shine, you have the information you need…and best of all IT WAS FREE!!!!!!!!! Now how's that for sticking it to the man…the 411 man, that is.

Stock Types

basketball jerseys

nba jersey

First time investors are most commonly confused at first by the different type of stocks. On occasion, this confusion causes them to leave the stock market investment cycle, or just make some very bad investment judgments. If one is to try and play the stock market, one must be informed of the types of stock are available for purchase, and what they all mean!

Common Stock is a term that one will hear quite a bit. Common stock is purchasable by anyone without regard to age, income, or financial standing. Common stock is essentially part ownership in the business one buys it from. The value of your stock rises only when the company grows and earns money. When value of your stock falls, the company you invested in is doing poorly or going bankrupt. The board of directors is what controls the day-to-day affairs of the company, and it is only through the election of the board are stockholders able to exert any influence over the company.

There are numerous different types of stock, along with common stock. The two classes in a company are denominated as Class A and Class B. Class A stock, essentially, gives A stock owners more votes per A share stock that they own than that of the B class stock. This ability to create kinds of stocks was legalized/introduced into the stock world in 1987. Most investors choose to avoid companies with more than one class of stock, and companies with different types of stock are said to have no stock names as common stock.

The stock considered premium stock is called preferred Stock. It is considered to be the best type of stock one can own. Preferred stock can be classified as part bond and part stock. Since the owners of preferred stock can lay claims to a company's assets, it is seen as a less risky, though more expensive option. Furthermore, those with preferred stock have the profits divided up among themselves before those with common stock. However, a company has the right to buy back Preferred stock, thus discontinuing the payment of dividends.

Knowing the types of stock out there today, now you cannot help but be able to choose and buy stock from a company that meets your needs, and will probably result in some profit for you. Remember that while stock market trading can be a very enjoyable experience, it can also be tense and potentially ruinous, so caution is urged. Good luck!

Revlon Stainless Steel Blackhead Remover: Review

Export prices of Chinese structural steel have declined by another $20 (Dh73) to $30 per tonne, making the product more competitive in the UAE market.

Hot rolled coil is now priced between $530 and $540 per tonne. Plates have come down to $550 per tonne. Two weeks ago, China was exporting plates at $570 per tonne, angles at $550, beams at $570, hot rolled coil at $560 and galvanised coil at $770 per tonne.

According to industry, officials and traders, imports from China would pick up after the end of the Chinese holiday season on October 8.

Karel Costenoble, Manager at the UAE-based Mesteel, said the market is quiet at present, awaiting the return of the Chinese.

"The Chinese are dominating the market and it remains quiet because of the Chinese holiday from October 1 to 8. People will not buy unless the Chinese return to the market," he said.

Emirates Business had earlier reported that the Chinese products that remained expensive until the end of July were getting attractive following a significant reduction in prices. "The prices have fallen further during the past two weeks as a result of increased production in China," said Costenoble.

Another trader said that they are waiting for the prices to fall further before placing orders. "It has gone down so much during the past few weeks and could fall further, especially as the demand worldwide continues to remain low," he said.

Importers in many other countries are also in a wait-and-watch mode over bringing in steel from China.

Reports indicate that South Korean importers are holding back orders and watching the continuous price fall. They think the price trend may be unravelled in mid-October, citing most Chinese H-beam producers' plans of overall production after October 12.

However, China Logistics Information Service Centre said prices could soon edge up. A recent report by Mysteel.net said quoting the centre that Chinese domestic steel price has dropped since early August. But after a month of adjustment, it could edge up firmly again.

According to data from National Bureau of Statistics of China, the nation's August crude steel output totalled 52.327 million tonnes, up by 22 per cent, while the accumulated output of steel products was 61.983 million tonnes, an increase of 28.9 per cent year-on-year.

China's steel products output has been above 60 million tonnes for three consecutive months since June. The country's daily production reached 1.688 million tonnes of crude steel and 1.999 million tonnes of steel products in August, both hitting a record high.

As for China's steel export, it totalled 2.08 million tonnes in August, down by 72.9 per cent year-on-year, but up by 15.1 per cent, or 0.27 million tonnes, compared to July, setting a monthly new high this year as per the customs statistics.

UAE production levels, too, have been increasing during the past two months.

Emirates Steel said steel output and sales during the third quarter increased compared to the previous quarter. According to reports quoting Ahmad Al Dhaheri, Assistant Vice-President for projects, the mills were "ramped up" during the second quarter, enabling the company to increase its production to full capacity of 1.8 million tonnes per year.

Hussein Al Nowais, Chairman of Emirates Steel, recently told this newspaper that August witnessed the highest production level at 170,000 tonnes.

Today while browsing a review site I came across a review that was outright praising a product that I myself have used a few time in my past. The review praised it… no problem it worked for them.

Here's my take on the Revlon Stainless Steel Blackhead Remover though. The negative take.

What is it?

The Revlon Stainless Steel Blackhead Remover is probably the oddest and stupidest thing I have ever come across in my life. While browsing for some acne cream at my local Walmart, and employee took notice, and told me I had nice skin. I rolled my eyes and pointed to a few narsty narstys that managed to pop up that week on my face.

She then pointed out the device. The Revlon Stainless Steel Blackhead Remover. I picked it up and read it. To me it looked like something you would find in the dentists office. Its a very thin metal rod, with two metal loops on either end. One loop is larger then the other.

The Concept:

Apply the loop on top of your pimple, squeeze down to your face, and slowly slide along your skin. This applies pressure to the pimple or black head, or white head what have you… and causes it to explode.

I didn't find the concept much different then the old school poor mans method, of taking index finger on left hand, and taking pointer finger on right hand, apply to sides of pimple, and squeeze.

To me, it just seemed like an expensive method to popping a zit, when I could do it for free with my fat fingers.

I figured the $4.00 I spent on it would not be a huge loss. It would be a stupid loss if it sucked, but not a huge one.

At home I opened my stainless steel rod, and used the larger loop hole side on this monster puff I had beating on my forehead. I applied the loop directly over the rod, and added some pressure to the area. I then slowly began to slide the rod downwards, and….

Ech, gross, nasty, explosion, filthy, puss… it landed on my mirror.

So the rod worked. It caused an explosion. Hmm… but I'm confused, they say don't pop a zit, let it heal on its own. Yet now I 'can' pop a zit, and not cause a scar so long as I use this Revlon rod?!

I'm kinda not buying it. The explosion was no different then one that I could of caused with my fingers. How are they saying there will be no scarring!? BS… I'm sniffing foul play here.

Whatever though. I figured this rod was cleaner then my dirty fingers, so why not use it instead of my nubs.

I moved on to pimple numero two. This pimple was a bit smaller, so I reversed the rod, and used the smaller loop. I placed the rod on my zit, applied pressure and slowly slid forward.

Holy hell, it F'in hurt! The loops hole was either too sharp or I applied to much pressure. Either way I had managed to peel a very small layer of skin.

That was when the wonderful Revlon Stainless Steel Blackhead Remover ended up in the trash. I knew from there on out that popping pimples poor mans way was a hell of a lot safer. I'd end up with scars all over my face if I continued to use the piece of crap Revlon Stainless Steel Blackhead Remover.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas and the Future of Cars

wholesale mlb jerseys

In the past two years, the development of the LPG vehicle solution to the automotive fuel exhaust in urban air pollution has become a hot topic in major cities. LPG vehicles are good for the development of the country, society. First, to accelerate the development of the gas car, we must solve the vehicle to facilitate the gas supply problems. Vehicle must be made of gas supply, as easy as car fuel. A LPG vehicle is one that runs on Liquefied Petroleum Gas and is sometimes called Autogas.

“Stations” for gas injection gas vehicle to know the world is common and is also the current gas supply of gas in the car the easiest and most advanced way of a gas supply, this point has been on everyone's accepted: however, the construction of filling stations to be a safe distance from the fire and limit the overall planning of urban construction constraints on major cities in the urban construction of the status quo, not to mention into a rational distribution, to meet the needs of gas filling the car being enough. The construction of filling stations can not form a network, and can not solve the gas supply problem.

In order to solve problems such as gas stations, the current state departments are developing “auto-LPG filling stations,” making design, and construction standards. But building these stations will not solve all the problems. This is because:

1. Liquefied petroleum gas, after all, is an inflammable, explosive, and dangerous, so it's filling and storage must be a safe distance from other buildings, and meet other safety conditions and requirements

2. Major cities in the transformation of urban construction have been almost completed, in the end they have already been turned into a city-building infrastructure, and its degree of difficulty can well be imagined. As a result, even if the gas stations with new designs, construction rules introduced, to improve gas station building, and the formation of a reasonable distribution network, it is still a very long way away.

Faced with this situation, there are two options: One is to wait for filling out the design of building norms, a perfect place to build filling stations, and gradually restricted to vehicles used in the implementation of the gas conversion plant. Another proposal, advanced from the gas stations is, step by step in improving the construction of filling stations. The problem, such as gas stations to be formed after the gas supply network, and then come back on the gas, such as gas stations. The key question here is to solve problem of the cylinder motor and the cylinder valve closed connection, to achieve national standards for the installation of fixed strength and sealing requirements. To ensure that the use of security, and the replacement of the cylinders can operate short, fast, and at the same time meet the needs of the filling operation.

There are over 600 abandoned mines located within the borders of Connecticut. You might say that modern mining was born in Connecticut. One of these many mines was located in the Town of Monroe just Northwest of Bridgeport. This mine produced the strategic metal “Tungsten” from the mineral scheelite that is composed of tungsten carbonate. This mine was worked from its discovery in the 1800s through World War I and reactivated for a brief time during World War II. It has since become part of a town park in Monroe. Mineral collectors still visit this locality to collect specimens of scheelite and several other minerals found at this site. Just as you come into town from Bridgeport on CT Route 25 scheelite has been found in a roadcut that has become another Mecca for collectors.

The story of the Monroe Tungsten Mine begins in 1828 when Elijah Hawley leased four acres of land on Long Hill in the Town of Monroe to Ephraim Lane in an area called “Shagnawamp” for the purpose of digging any ores or minerals as they deem proper. The lease also included the rights to pass teams and carts over the property for the necessary transporting of ores and minerals from said locality.

Ephraim Lane leased or sold the rights to this land to Thomas R. Hubbard who worked the land in a primitive manner digging for copper, lead and silver. All of the openings opened by the Lanes produced scheelite, but at this early date it was only of interest to mineralogists as at this early date there was no known use for the metal tungsten. The mineralogists were highly interested because although the original mineral was scheelite CaWO4 is replaced by iron making the new mineral a psuedomorph after scheelite called wolframite FeWO4 . This was done without changing the form of the original scheelite crystals.

Several successive owners worked the mine for limestone and feldspar and some of them even went as far as making artificial stone from the products of the mine. In May of 1897 after the invention of the incandescent light bulb by Thomas Edison when a use for tungsten was finally discovered Edward B. Machete and and William R. Hinsdale of New York who had other mining interests of their own signed a lease with Adalaide Hubbard negotiating a new lease that was to run for three years. They also founded a new company called, “The American Tungsten Mining and Milling Company.”

Then for about two years the company didn't do anything until July of 1899 the company negotiated a loan of $100,000 that they secured with gold bonds valued for $500 each that matured in July, 1914. At about the same time they erected an extensive plant to concentrate the ore. This was built on a steep incline close to the mine so they could take advantage of gravity to feed the ore through the mill. The ore was mined in large chunks that was reduced in size by a ten ton per hour Blake crusher.

The Blake crusher was invented a few years before the events described here by the Connecticut Inventor, Eli Whitney Blake and heralded in the age of modern mining technology; prior to that most stone crushing was done in stamping mills that were extremely noisy and dusty in use.

The ore was then carried across a table for hand sorting afterwards it passed through other crushers and rollers where it was transported to the top of the mine again by elevator. It was then passed through a series of screens; then to a Hooper dry concentrator. From the dry concentrator it went into a smelting process to burn off a small amount of iron pyrites that was an impurity in the ore. No one knows how many concentrators the company had but it was said they could concentrate 10 tons per day of ore.

In a USGS report issued in 1901 it was reported that very little tungsten was reported to have reached the market. At this point Bethlehem Steel took an interest in the project and work resumed with changes and additions to the plant. In a copy of the Bridgeport “Times Star” printed on October 6, 1933 it was reported that Bethlehem Steel finally owned the property. Tungsten ore was brought to the surface by three elevators. The mine was in operation for only three months passed and it suffered a disastrous fire on May 21, 1916. The loss from this fire was estimated to be between $250,000 and $300,000. It was reported that the operator at the time of the fire was mining $1,000 per day worth of tungsten.

Today the Town of Monroe owns the property that has been changed into a park with a swimming pool and recreation faculties for the residents of Monroe. Although collecting has been permitted in the past you should check with the Monroe Police Department before proceeding.
